Are you planning to change your degree programme?

When changing degree programmes, different conditions apply depending on your personal situation. For example, it is important to know whether the new degree programme is comparable to the previous degree programme. You can find everything you need to know on this page.

  • Degree programmes are comparable if they do not differ significantly in terms of the qualification objectives and the skills taught in the degree programme.
  • Within the HdM, the following Bachelor's degree programmes are considered comparable at undergraduate level:
    - Print and Media Technology / Digital Publishing <> Print Media Management / Industrial Engineering Media <> Packaging Technology
    - Media Informatics <> Mobile Media
    - Online Media Management <> Business Informatics and Digital Media (only until enrolment summer semester 2016)
  • Information on the comparability of degree programmes from other universities at the HdM can be obtained from the HdM Student Office.

  • If sufficient credit is awarded, it is possible to apply for a higher semester (see below) of a comparable degree programme. The de-registration in the previous degree programme must then be submitted at the latest upon enrolment in the new degree programme.
  • Students who have already studied a comparable degree programme and have lost their right to take examinations there (e.g. due to finally failed examinations or missing a deadline) cannot be admitted to a comparable degree programme. (LHG §60, 2, 2)
  • When applying to another university, a so-called clearance certificate may be required. HdM students can obtain this certificate from the HdM Examinations Office to confirm that they are still entitled to take examinations in their previous degree programme.

  • It is generally possible to apply for a non-comparable degree programme, even if you have lost your right to take examinations in your previous non-comparable degree programme.
  • Exception: HdM students who have definitively failed an examination in the previous non-comparable HdM degree programme, which must also be taken as a compulsory module in the new HdM degree programme, cannot be admitted if this definitively failed examination is "credited ex officio". --> For "ex officio crediting" see below.

  • The application for a change of degree programme at the HdM for the coming semester runs via the regular application procedure of the HdM:
    www.hdm-stuttgart.de/studieninteressierte/bewerber/bewerbung
  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in the third or a higher semester in an undergraduate degree programme and wish to change this undergraduate degree programme must provide written proof of academic counselling. This certificate must be submitted at the latest upon enrolment (LHG §60, 2, 5).
--> If you have any questions about changing your degree programme at the HdM and for proof of the mandatory counselling interview, please contact the Central Student Advisory Service of the HdM.

Information on clarifying the admission requirements for previous periods of study can be obtained from the HdM Study Office.
