FAQs on applying for a Master's degree programme
Here you will find a checklist with all the required documents.
On the websites of the degree programmes you will find an overview of which optional documents (e.g. letter of motivation, proof of voluntary work, letters of recommendation, etc.) you can still submit and how these are included in your application.
Unfortunately, this is not possible. You can only apply for a Master's degree programme at the HdM.
You can only apply for most Master's degree programmes in the winter semester. Applications open in mid-May and the application deadline is 15 July.
The Computer Science and Media and Master of Media Research degree programmes also admit applications for the summer semester. The application deadline for these is 15 January.
You can also apply if you do not have your degree certificate by the application deadline. Please submit your current transcript of records (with calculated, weighted average grade and indication of the total ECTS) and your registration for the final thesis with your application.
You must have taken and passed all your examinations and submitted your certificate of exmatriculation by the start of the lecture period at the latest.
Please note that in order to apply for a part-time Master's degree programme, you must have one year of professional experience following your first university degree.
You can also apply if you have not yet completed all the coursework in your current degree programme. Exception: For part-time Master's degree programmes, however, a university degree and professional experience are required.
A provisional grade is then used for the application. This is usually issued by your current university. Open or not yet graded achievements are not included in the calculation of the provisional grade.
You can also calculate your provisional grade yourself: To do this, you must multiply the grade for each subject by the ECTS points for the subject, add these up for all subjects and divide by the total number of ECTS for all these subjects (ECTS-weighted average).
If you use your own calculation, this must still be confirmed by your current university.
If you have completed fewer than 210 ECTS credits in your undergraduate degree programme, you must complete what are known as " alignment credits". These are defined in an individual Learning Agreement.
The Master's degree programmes at the HdM are consecutive, i.e. they build on specific degree programmes and their associated course content. You can only successfully apply for a Master's degree programme if your Bachelor's degree programme covers this content (e.g. contains a certain number of credits in a certain subject area) or, if your Bachelor's degree had 180 ECTS, if you still have to complete the missing content in the alignment achievements.
Most degree programmes have published information on the admission requirements on their websites - be sure to check there before you apply.
If you have any questions or are unsure, please contact the degree programme.
If you have completed your Bachelor's degree abroad, you must have your degree recognised by the Studienkolleg in Konstanz. This process takes a few weeks - so make sure you allow enough time. You can find more information on recognition at the Studienkolleg Konstanz.
As a foreign applicant, you must also submit proof of your German language skills (language certificate: e.g. TestDaF or TelC).
Further information for foreign applicants can be found here.
As the Master's degree programmes at the HdM only last three semesters (or five semesters for part-time Master's degree programmes), it is not possible to apply for a higher semester. However, if your application is successful, it is possible to have previous credits from another degree programme recognised. Please contact the degree programme if you have any questions on this topic.
The staff at the HdM's Centre for Continuing Education will be happy to advise you.
