General admission requirements

Different admission requirements apply to the various degree programmes offered by the Hochschule der Medien. You can find out what you need to look out for if you want to apply for a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme, for example, on this page.

Bachelor programme

  • General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur)
  • Subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (Fachabitur in all subject areas)
  • Fachhochschulreife with validity for a university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg

These must be submitted to the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart for certificate recognition if it is not clear from the wording of the certificate that the Fachhochschulreife is also valid in Baden-Württemberg. A common formulation is:"The Fachhochschulreife entitles the holder to study at a university of applied sciences in the Federal Republic of Germany."

Further information can be found on the website of the Stuttgart Regional Council.

School-leaving qualifications obtained abroad may have to be recognised.

The number of study places is limited in all degree programmes at the university, meaning that a selection must be made from all applicants. Different criteria are used in the degree programmes, which are given credit towards the grade of the university entrance qualification.
Vocational training generally plays a central role here. In most degree programmes (exceptions: degree programmes with an entrance examination), a voluntary letter of application can be submitted. Please answer the key questions listed in the template, observing the stated character limit per question (characters with spaces). The aim is to justify your subject-specific aptitude and motivation for the degree programme and the professional activity you wish to pursue.

Double utilisation is not possible, i.e. a practical activity that has already been part of vocational training, for example, cannot be used again in the letter of application.

An entrance examination is held for the Integrated Product Design, Media Entertainment and Socail Media Marketing & Management degree programmes.
All details are regulated in the entrance examination regulations (as of 18.11.2022).

All universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg require students to take a study orientation test. The test shows which degree programmes or professional fields best match your personal interests. The confirmation of participation at the end of the test must be printed out and enclosed with the application.

Second degree programme

Anyone who has already successfully completed an undergraduate degree programme in Germany and is seeking a second undergraduate degree is considered a second degree applicant with special admission requirements.

  • For the selection procedure, a certified copy of the degree certificate from the first degree programme with final grade (by the end of the application deadline) as well as a detailed written and signed justification for the second degree programme (approx. 1-2 pages) must be enclosed. For the selection procedure, the regulations on second degree programmes of the Foundation for University Admission apply.
For further information, see "Guidelines for decisions on applications from applicants for a second degree programme" of the Foundation for University Admission (PDF), under II. decision criteria, p. 9-11
  • Only 2 percent of the available study places on a degree programme are allocated to second degree applicants as part of the preliminary quota.
  • Only one application for admission to a second degree programme may be submitted per university.
  • Since the winter semester 2017/18, universities in Baden-Württemberg have been charging tuition fees for second degree programmes.
  • Information on applying for a second degree programme can be obtained from the Central Student Advisory Service at the HdM.

Master's programme

To study for a Master's degree at the HdM, applicants need a first internationally recognised university degree, for example a Bachelor's, Magister or Diplom degree from a university or university of applied sciences, the first state examination or a degree from a dual university or university of cooperative education.

At the Hochschule der Medien, admission to one of our consecutive Master's degree programmes is only possible if the content of the first degree previously completed matches the Master's degree programme you are aiming for. Further information on the content requirements for the first degree as well as the application and admission formalities can be found on the websites of the respective Master's degree programmes.

An application for a consecutive Master's degree programme can also be made if the first degree programme has not yet been completed. In this case, a provisional grade is calculated based on all examination results available at the time of application. The first degree programme must be completed by the date of the start of lectures at the latest.

If less than 210 ECTS credits were earned in the first Bachelor's degree programme, you may be required to take transfer credits for admission to our 3-semester Master's degree programmes.

Change of subject

If you are or were already enrolled in the third or a higher semester in an undergraduate degree programme and would like to change this undergraduate degree programme, written proof of academic counselling is required. This certificate must be submitted upon enrolment at the latest (LHG §60, 2, 5).

If you have already studied a comparable degree programme and have lost your right to take examinations there (e.g. because you have definitively failed examinations or missed a deadline), you cannot be admitted (LHG §60, 2, 2).

Application for a higher semester

In order to enter a higher semester, you must have already studied at a university and have sufficient credits in the future degree programme. Placement in a higher semester is only possible after attending a study-related counselling session and is based on credited coursework. This requires the submission of an application for credit transfer.
