


How much will my degree programme cost?
Welcome to the HdM page on semester fees. Here you will find all the information about the costs incurred during your studies: from administrative fees to contributions to the student union. Find out about deadlines, possible late fees and details about part-time study programmes and refunds.
Costs
Semester fees
Every enrolled student must pay the following fees per semester (valid from winter semester 2024/25)
- Administration fee until 31 December 2024 70.00 euros and from 1 January 2025 80.00 euros
- Contribution to the constituted student body (VS) 15.00 euros
- Contribution for the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart in the amount of 96.50 euros
If you have any questions about the composition of the VS contribution, please contact the constituted student body.
Feedback deadlines
During the re-registration period, the fees and contributions for the coming semester must be paid. The following re-registration deadlines currently apply:
- for a summer semester by 01 February
- for a winter semester by 01 August
If you re-register after the above deadlines, you must also pay a late fee of 10.00 euros.
Other fees
Please note that additional fees may apply.
Extra tuition fees are charged for part-time, continuing education degree programmes in accordance with the statutes on the charging of fees and expenses at Hochschule der Medien. Separate regulations apply here.
Resignation
If you withdraw from your study place, you can apply for a refund of the fees you have already paid (administration fee and VS contribution) by submitting the following application . The application for a refund of the fees must be received by the Studierendenwerk by the end of the first month of the semester. Please note the current fee regulations of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart.
Note on the reimbursement of contributions
In accordance with § 12 of the State University Fees Act, the administrative fee will be refunded by HdM in the event of de-registration within one month of the start of the lecture period. The same applies to the reimbursement of the contribution to the constituted student body on the basis of § 4 of the VS contribution statutes. In accordance with § 6 Para. 3 of the Student Union Fee Regulations, the Student Union fee will be refunded upon application to the Student Union if the student has exmatriculated at the end of the first month of the semester. The application must be received by the Studentenwerk Stuttgart by the end of the first month of the semester.
Tuition fees for international students and for a second degree programme
Tuition fees for international students - Who has to pay?
Students who do not have one of the following nationalities
- German
- Member State EU
- EEA member state
and who are enrolled in an undergraduate Bachelor's degree programme or a consecutive Master's degree programme.
As an international student, you are generally obliged to pay tuition fees. However, the law provides for certain exceptions where international students who fulfil the required criteria are not obliged to pay tuition fees. If the exemption criteria apply to you and you submit the required documents in good time with your application or before re-registration, you will not have to pay tuition fees.

Second degree fees - Who has to pay?
Students,
- at state universities in Baden-Württemberg with the exception of universities of public administration,
- who take up a second or further course of study in an undergraduate degree programme (Bachelor's degree programme or degree programme according to § 34 para. 1 LHG) after obtaining a university degree or equivalent qualification in Germany, or
- who commence a second or further course of study in a consecutive Master's degree programme after obtaining a university degree or equivalent qualification in Germany, or
- who are enrolled in two or more different degree programmes at the same or several state bw universities after having completed a degree programme, starting with the semester following the date of the first degree certificate

The above regulations do not apply to:
- continuing education Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes,
- other continuing education degree programmes in accordance with Section 31 (3) LHG,
- non-consecutive degree programmes (old cases), Section 20 (1) sentence 3 LHG.
The law provides for a few exceptions to the obligation to pay tuition fees for a second degree programme, but these are not relevant for universities of applied sciences, as the relevant subjects cannot be studied at universities of applied sciences.
Who can be exempted from paying tuition fees on application?
- Students during a leave of absence, provided that the application for a leave of absence was submitted before the start of the lecture period,
- Students during a practical semester of study in accordance with Section 29 (3) sentence 2 of the State Higher Education Act.
In addition to the tuition fees, all students are required to pay a semester fee each semester.
This is due for the first time upon enrolment and then every semester when re-registering. The semester fee must also be paid in the event of an exemption or waiver of tuition fees!

Before making a bank transfer, please clarify whether foreign banks may charge additional fees for the transfer to ensure that the correct amount is received by HdM.
