BAföG: Your path to student financing

The Federal Training Assistance Act, or BAföG for short, is more than just financial support. It is a central instrument for equal opportunities in the education system and enables you to concentrate on your studies.

Core objectives of BAföG

  • Equal opportunities: BAföG ensures access to higher education regardless of parental income. It supports you in overcoming financial obstacles and realising your full educational potential.
  • Financial independence: The grant enables you to cover living and study costs. This reduces the need for part-time jobs, giving you more time for your studies and better learning outcomes.
  • Investment in the future: A degree programme significantly improves your career prospects. BAföG is a state investment in your qualification. Part of the funding is an interest-free loan, which only has to be repaid after your studies with a maximum amount; the other part is a grant and does not have to be repaid.
  • State support: BAföG is a statutory right to educational support. The state thus promotes the success and qualification of future skilled workers.

The Germany Scholarship

In addition to BAföG, the Deutschlandstipendium offers another attractive way of financing your studies. It is aimed at talented and high-achieving students and promotes not only excellent grades, but also social commitment and overcoming particular personal challenges.

At 300 euros per month, half of which is financed by the federal government and half by private sponsors (companies, foundations, private individuals), this scholarship is a valuable addition. It does not have to be repaid and can be combined with BAföG. The universities select the scholarship holders themselves and generally award the funding for at least two semesters up to the standard period of study.
