Studying with a child
It is no easy task for students with children to find a good balance between their studies, part-time job and family commitments, especially in the typical everyday life of a student. The regulations, laws and support available in the Stuttgart Region are summarised here.
The Maternity Protection Act applies to all women in employment. Expectant mothers, women who have given birth and women who are breastfeeding are afforded special protection. The prerequisite is an existing employment relationship in the Federal Republic of Germany, regardless of the type of employment.
However, it should be noted that this law does not apply to female students who are employed as part of a compulsory internship.
Further information on maternity protection itself can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
- Maternity benefit The Maternity Protection Act provides for an allowance for maternity benefit. It is paid for the period of maternity protection and amounts to 13 euros per calendar day. The application can be made at the earliest seven weeks before the expected date of birth at the maternity allowance office of the Federal Insurance Office or online.
- Parental allowance Parental allowance is paid to parents who want or need to look after their child themselves for the first 14 months of their child's life and are therefore unable to work more than 30 hours per week. Parental leave can be taken by either parent alone or by both parents together.
- Child benefit Child benefit is intended to cover a child's minimum subsistence level. The eligibility requirements are regulated in the Federal Child Benefit Act. Child benefit amounts to 255 euros per month per child. Low-earning parents are entitled to a child supplement if they are able to cover their parents' minimum subsistence level but would need unemployment benefit II without the child supplement. If you receive child supplement, you can receive allowances for excursions, lunch or school supplies, among other things.

The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart, to which the HdM also belongs, runs several daycare centres. The groups look after children from the age of 10 months until they start school. The childcare places in the daycare centres are specially reserved for children of students, which is why a valid student certificate is required for registration. In addition, the child must be resident in Stuttgart for a childcare place in the Stuttgart daycare centres.
The childcare centres of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart are located in Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg and Esslingen.
You can register your child from the day of birth at the earliest. Depending on the type of centre, registration is carried out via the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart or the Stups e. V. association, which runs the day nurseries. You can find further information on the daycare centres and holiday childcare at https://www.studierendenwerk-stuttgart.de/kinder/kitas
