Studying with a chronic illness or disability

Studying successfully at the HdM is also possible with a chronic illness or disability and is actively supported by the university. How do I get into the lecture halls with a wheelchair? How do I apply for a disability pass? Which contact points and contact persons are there? Those affected will find answers to these and other questions here.

The regulations on studying with a disability or chronic illness are set out in Section 32 of the Study and Examination Regulations. A disability or chronic illness is defined as a restriction "which makes it particularly difficult to complete the
coursework within the deadlines according to § 9". In these cases, an individualised study plan can be created and granted upon written application. The individual study plan must include at least two modules
per semester.

§ 32 Students with a disability or chronic illness

  1. If a student with a
permanent or temporary disability or a chronic illness makes it difficult for him or her to complete an examination or coursework in the prescribed form,
the responsible examination board may, at the student's request, issue an individualised study plan,
the responsible examination board may, upon request, take appropriate measures to compensate for the
impairment or - insofar as the objective of the respective examination or coursework
can also be equivalently demonstrated by another type of examination or coursework
    - allow the examination or coursework to be completed in a different form.
Proof of skills that are part of the performance profile of the examination taken,
may not be waived. The application must be submitted informally by the student concerned
in text form within the deadline specified in the university's schedule.

The application for recognition of a chronic illness or disability and the associated approval of an individual study plan must be submitted in writing to the Central Examination Board. The following
documents must be enclosed:

  1. A copy of the valid disability certificate must be enclosed
  2. A medical certificate containing the necessary findings and explaining the
impairments and effects on the degree programme or the individual examination performance
. The examination board may request the submission of a certificate from a doctor appointed by it
    .
  3. A draft of the individual study plan signed by the head of the degree programme
    must be submitted

If an applicant proves by means of a medical certificate that he/she is unable to take the examination in whole or in part in the prescribed form or processing time or with the authorised aids due to a health impairment, the selection committee may, in appropriate cases and upon written application, permit the applicant to take equivalent examinations in a different form or with an extended processing time or with additional aids.

An application for the granting of compensation for disadvantages for an examination or form of examination must be submitted to the responsible examination board of the faculty. The application must be accompanied by a medical certificate containing the necessary findings and setting out the
impairments and effects on the degree programme or the individual examination
. The examination board may request the submission of a certificate from a doctor named by it
.
