Studying and caring - is that possible?
With the support of the Hochschule der Medien, we would like to make it possible for you to study while caring for relatives.

Between everyday nursing care and the curriculum
Starting or continuing your studies while taking on the responsibility of caring for a relative is a major challenge. While many fellow students focus on internships or experiences abroad, you may be structuring your day around medication schedules, doctor's appointments or caring for a close relative. This responsibility is not visible, but it is very present.
If you find yourself in such a situation, we would like to share one thing with you: you do not have to walk this path alone. Put your trust in the Central Student Advisory Service, there are many support options to make your studies easier.
Offers of support
Examination deadlines can be extended, e.g. for repeat examinations, intermediate examinations or the Bachelor's thesis.
The processing time for your Bachelor's thesis can be extended by up to 50% if you can credibly demonstrate that you have nursing responsibilities.
You can take a semester off during which you can continue to attend courses and take examinations.
The practical semester can be postponed if studying and nursing are currently not compatible.

Special regulations for special situations
The Hochschule der Medien expressly takes students who are carers into account in its study and examination regulations (§ 30 SPO). These special regulations help you to organise your studies at your own pace. The exact special regulations can be found in § 30 of the Study and Examination Regulations (SPO). In order to claim compensation for disadvantages, you must provide appropriate evidence and are obliged to report any changes or cancellations in the requirements directly to the nursing department.
Three important steps for your journey
Talk about it
Contact the Student Office or the Equal Opportunities Officer at an early stage. The earlier we know, the better we can find solutions together.
Utilise the scope
Extended deadlines, flexible study planning, semesters off with examination rights - many things are possible. Make the most of these opportunities.
Take care of yourself
Care is not only an organisational burden, but also an emotional one. Get support - from the HdM, friends or counselling centres.

You are not alone
We know: It takes courage to embark on a degree programme when you are also responsible for others. But it is possible. And we are happy to support you. You are doing a great job, even if it often goes unnoticed. We see you and want you to be able to follow your path at HdM.
Note: All information is subject to change. The current regulations of the applicable Study and Examination Regulations (SPO) apply.
