


The Senate of the HdM
The University Senate meets regularly during the semester. Professors, staff and students are represented there. It decides on matters of teaching, study and research that are of fundamental importance and are not assigned by law to another body, the faculties or the university institutions for a final decision. It elects the Rector and Vice-Rectors, passes resolutions in connection with the establishment, modification and cancellation of degree programmes, structural and development plans and proposals for the appointment of professors. The Senate has 21 members. The term of office of the members runs from 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2027.

The University Council
According to the State Higher Education Act, the University Council is responsible for the development of the university and proposes measures to raise its profile and increase its performance and competitiveness. It oversees the management of the Rectorate (Section 20 (1) LHG).
The University Council of the Hochschule der Medien has seven members and began its work in this composition on 1 September 2021.

Prof Andreas Bieswanger (Chairman)
Prof. Andreas Bieswanger was appointed IBM Fellow in April 2020 and assumed the position of "IBM Z CTO Platform Management & Optimisation" at IBM. In this role, he is responsible for the strategy and architecture of hardware platform management for the IBM Z and LinuxONE product families. In close co-operation with users, he implements innovation and transformation projects to increase the vitality and growth of the platform. After completing his studies in computer science, he has contributed significantly to product development projects at IBM Deutschland Research & Development GmbH in Böblingen since 1994. His professional career was complemented by several years abroad at the IBM development centre in Austin, Texas.
Prof Dr Bettina Schwarzer
Dr Bettina Schwarzer has been Professor of Business Information Systems at the HdM since 2003. Her work focusses on the interface between strategic management and IT, particularly in the area of enterprise architecture management. She was Dean of Studies for the E-Services/Online Media Management courses for 14 years and Vice-Rector for Digitalisation at the HdM for three years. Prior to her appointment, she was managing partner of an IT consulting company.
Prof Dr Bernhard Dusch
Dr Bernhard Dusch has been a professor of design at the Hochschule der Medien (HdM) since September 2014. In addition to his full-time work at the HdM, he also teaches at the University of Cambridge in the UK. His teaching and research topics include design theory and design methodology as well as sustainable design. Prior to his appointment at the HdM, he worked as a photographer, designer and consultant, including for MetaDesign AG in Berlin.
Dr Sabine Hückmann
Dr Sabine Hückmann is Senior Partner for Strategic Consulting and Communications Management at the German market leader fischerAppelt. She develops data-based strategies and creative programmes that have a measurable positive impact on brands, organisations and society. She contributes 30 years of professional experience in all areas of corporate and marketing communications. She is also active in organisational development, transforming communications departments structurally and culturally to meet the demands of today's stakeholder economy. Since September 2015, she has also been a member of the corporate advisory board of the Crossmedia Editing / Public Relations degree programme at the HdM.
Erik Kurtz
Erik Kurtz supports companies in the printing industry with the introduction and further development of MIS/ERP systems as well as with other entrepreneurial tasks. He was managing partner of the book manufacturer Kösel GmbH & Co KG in Altusried-Krugzell until the beginning of 2020. He started there in 2000 as Head of Project Development and gradually took over responsibility for all technical areas. Erik Kurtz studied printing technology at the HdM (then Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences, Hochschule für Druck), specialising in prepress technology, and worked at the university's Institute for Applied Research and as Head of Prepress at Wanfried-Druck Kalden GmbH, where he expanded the digital prepress department.
Sandra Schoenrade
Sandra Schoenrade has headed the User Experience Enabling Team in Corporate IT at Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart-Feuerbach since 2018. After completing her degree in business administration, she went on to study psychology in 2003. She then worked for the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) in Stuttgart in the field of user experience, usability and human-centred design before taking over the project management of UX projects and being responsible for UX training as User Experience Manager at Robert Bosch GmbH. She then supported the development of the User Experience department at Bosch Corporate IT.
Prof Dr Simon Wiest (Deputy Chairman)
Dr Simon Wiest has been a professor at the Hochschule der Medien since September 2010. His teaching and research areas are computer science, interactive media and software technology. He was Dean of Studies for the Master's degree programme in Audiovisual Media and a member of the Faculty Council. Dr Simon Wiest received the State Teaching Award in 2019. Prior to his appointment at the HdM, he worked at the University of Tübingen, was a member of the management board of a Stuttgart-based new media agency and an independent IT engineer in the field of database publishing and software technology.
