The Hochschule der Medien (HdM) in Stuttgart is characterised by practical and future-oriented research. The focus is on current challenges and innovative solutions in the broad field of media.

HdM research lighthouses

A research lighthouse is an outstanding, strategically focussed research focus at universities or research institutions. It pools expertise, resources and interdisciplinary competences on a socially or technologically particularly relevant topic. The aim is to provide new scientific impetus with innovative, application-orientated projects and at the same time contribute to solving pressing future issues. Typical characteristics of a research lighthouse are a strong focus on a forward-looking topic, interdisciplinarity, practical relevance and a high demand for innovation and social impact.

Institute for Applied Children's Media Research (IfaK)

The Institute for Applied Children's Media Research (IfaK) researches the development of children's media, in particular audiovisual, digital and interactive formats and their history.

It promotes interdisciplinary research and offers co-operation projects. The historical collection of children's media comprising over 4,000 objects, which is scientifically analysed and used for exhibitions, is unique.

Institute for Quality Management and Organisational Development in Libraries (IQO)

The Institute for Quality Management and Organisational Development (IQO ) focuses its research on libraries and information institutions. It develops social and business management tools and methods specifically for the public sector in order to promote conceptual and practical organisational development. Quality management is used as a central strategic management tool.

The IQO team combines expertise in the library sector with business management skills. Partners benefit from research, training and consultancy experience. Innovative concepts and tailor-made solutions for quality and organisational development processes are developed jointly.

Sustainable Media Institute (SUMI)

The Institute is convinced that sustainability characterises all areas of society, including the media industry, university teaching and research. Sustainability is seen as a core issue for the media and crucial for the transformation of the industry itself. Through its activities, the Institute aims to advance the discourse on sustainability and contribute significantly to the establishment of sustainable practices in the conception, production, distribution, interaction and use of media.

Enterprise Information Management (EIM)

The Enterprise Information Management Research Group (EIM-RG) researches strategies and methods for the efficient management and provision of documents and data in companies.

Its expertise includes enterprise content management (ECM), company portals, product information management (PIM) and content management. Through regular studies, EIM-RG gains in-depth market and application insights.

Visual Media Lab (VMLab)

The Visual Media Lab (VMLab) specialises in time-based media and visual Storytelling. This includes short film fiction and non-fiction, animation, visual effects, interactive exhibitions, media art, virtual reality and real-time installations. The VMLab is located in the VFX, Film and Event Media departments of the Audiovisuelle Medien degree programme and is part of the Faculty of Electronic Media.

One research focus of the VMLab is visual literacy. In view of the growing importance of images and visual media in our culture, the VMLab researches how information is conveyed and interpreted through images.
