Another cube for the Hochschule der Medien
Construction has now been approved
The Hochschule der Medien (HdM) is expanding: a new building is being constructed next to the square building at Nobelstraße 10a. A second, modern four-storey "cube" will provide additional seminar, learning and work areas. The HdM itself is the client, as the first university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg. It is overseeing the project in cooperation with the University Building Office. It received planning permission in July 2025.
The new building is planned as a teaching and instruction building with an open and flexible utilisation concept in order to meet new learning and teaching formats and future media requirements. Students and teaching staff will be given the opportunity to design their own working environment according to their needs
The new cube comprises a total of 1600 square metres of floor space spread over four floors. The main areas will be used for independent study, project work, supervised learning and practical work.

Well positioned
"For the HdM, a second 'cube' between the car park and the existing cube is an excellent option for overcoming spatial bottlenecks," says HdM Rector Prof. Dr Alexander W. Roos. "This puts us in a good position for the future of HdM. The new building will be another flagship for the university location in Nobelstrasse," says Roos.
The costs are expected to total around 12 million euros. "Everyone involved has put a lot of resources and passion into the long-running planning of this construction project. It is therefore a great success and an important milestone for the HdM that we will be able to start realising the building next year, which we are funding entirely from the university's own resources," explains Chancellor Nicole Kuhn. Due to its own financing, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Science have granted HdM the status of building owner.
Over the last 20 years, the HdM has become much smaller. Since 2001, the number of students has more than doubled, from 2,500 to 5,500. The number of places on offer has also increased to 30 Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. "The growth is noticeable in all areas. Above all, we lack workspaces for practical and project-oriented learning - the core of the HdM degree programme. We want to remedy this situation," says Prof Dr Alexander W. Roos.
The construction project is being realised by Plan7 Architekten in collaboration with Christof Simon, the architect of the existing cube. The building should be available for use from 2029.
