The Hochschule der Medien - idyll and urban flair in Stuttgart's Vaihingen district

The Hochschule der Medien (HdM) is located far above the valley basin in the centre of Stuttgart's university campus in the Vaihingen district. Idyllic surroundings and the Swabian metropolis are combined here in an attractive location. The neighbouring red deer park with the Solitude hunting and pleasure palace or the Bärenschlössle, a pavilion converted into a beer garden, speak for themselves. They were created by Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg and, with their marvellous views, invite you to take a walk or enjoy a coffee and cake. The red deer enclosure with its deer also attracts many visitors.

A place to feel at home: The student village around the HdM

At the same time, a small student village has developed around the Hochschule der Medien and the university with numerous halls of residence, pubs such as Unithekle, a small supermarket and the pizzeria "La Bruschetta" with fair student prices. Every summer, the university's Campus Beach opens its doors, which, like the canteen, is just a stone's throw away. The beach bar with its piled-up sand and deckchairs invites you to linger after a long day of studying.

We particularly recommend the student halls of residence, which offer table tennis, fitness rooms, the Wuba bar and many events for an active and sociable student life. In addition, the rents here are still comparatively low. It pays to apply early for a place! Exciting encounters with international students are guaranteed and not only promote cultural exchange. Students are also prepared for the global world of work.

Fit and active in Vaihingen - sports opportunities for students

HdM students can also take part in the University of Stuttgart's general university sports programme at reduced prices. The programme is varied and is often located on campus in the immediate vicinity of the university. If students are looking for refreshment in summer, they can cycle to the nearby Vaihingen outdoor pool.

The cultural highlights: Something for every taste

From the HdM, you can reach the city centre in ten minutes by train. On a walk through the city centre, the Schlossplatz square with the "Old Palace" catches the eye. The Königsbau Passagen shopping centre with its numerous shops and cafés adorns the square. Overall, the city is known for its lively and colourful cultural scene. The offer for culture-hungry students ranges from museums such as the Staatsgalerie to the StadtPalais on the historic Wilhelmsplatz. A major German vehicle manufacturer is also represented with the Mercedes-Benz Museum. After all, Stuttgart is the birthplace of the automobile. Students can spend rainy days in the city centre cinemas or in the city library on Mailänder Platz. This was designed by a Korean architect and is one of the most modern libraries in Europe. The State Theatre with its theatre, ballet and opera is a cultural highlight. In autumn, students are drawn to the Cannstatter Wasen - one of the largest folk festivals in the world. The Markthalle Stuttgart, an art nouveau building with international delicacies and Swabian specialities, should also be on every student's Stuttgart to-do list.

Marienplatz is also very popular with young people. Not only because of the place itself, but also because of the charming side streets where numerous bars, cafés and second-hand shops line up. The cog railway, affectionately known as the "Zacke" by Stuttgart locals, has been running from Marienplatz to one of the many hills since 1884. Once you reach your destination, you can enjoy a marvellous postcard panorama.

Relax and unwind in Stuttgart's green oases

Numerous spacious green areas and gardens in Stuttgart invite you to take a stroll. These include the Killesberg in the north and the Rosensteinpark in Bad Cannstatt. Wilhelma, a zoological and botanical garden, is located in this district. The Karlshöhe between Stuttgart South and West is also worth a visit. Its "Stäffele", vineyards and beer garden make the Karlshöhe something very special. After all, the eye also studies.

Dancing at Frida's Pier or would you prefer to chill out at Mata Hari?

Night owls also get their money's worth in Stuttgart. You can dance your heart out in trendy clubs such as the "Proton", the "Lehmann" or the "Schräglage". An insider tip is the event ship "Fridas Pier". If you don't fancy loud music, you should end the evening in the "Mata Hari" bar or the rustic "Palast der Republik" pub.

Tips for weekend excursions in the Stuttgart region

In the Stuttgart area, the medieval Christmas market in Esslingen is recommended for students due to its unique flair. At the weekends, students can plan trips to Ludwigsburg, Tübingen, Lake Constance or the Swabian Alb.

Diverse job opportunities for students

In order to be able to afford all these activities, the city, as an important economic centre in Germany, offers many internships and working student positions at well-known companies. These include Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Bosch, the fashion brand Boss and the Ernst Klett publishing house. The proximity to media companies such as SWR or agencies such as Ketchum offers exciting prospects, especially for students at the HdM.
