The appointment of professors is governed by the Baden-Württemberg Higher Education Act (Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG). Compliance with the legal requirements is a matter of course and follows a strictly regulated procedure to ensure that the position is filled with the most suitable candidate. The appointment process therefore takes several months until a final offer of appointment is made or the process is concluded without an appointment.
The university establishes an Appointment Committee, which oversees the entire appointment process and is responsible for drawing up a proposal for appointment. Information about the ongoing procedure may not be provided. The composition of the Appointment Committee is regulated by law under the LHG and comprises at least seven members.
- You apply for a position advertised by the university and receive confirmation that your application has been received.
- We review your application documents to determine whether you meet the formal legal requirements, the eligibility requirements for appointment, and the relevant academic and professional requirements.
- If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to give a public trial lecture, followed by a non-public interview with the Appointment Committee.
- Based on the selection process, the Appointment Committee draws up a proposal for appointment, ranking candidates first, second and third.
- Further statements and decisions are then obtained from and made by various bodies and committees.
- The candidates placed on the appointment list are informed accordingly, and all applicants receive notification of the outcome in accordance with the applicable regulations.
- Once agreement has been reached, the Rector makes the offer of appointment.
- Once the appointment offer has been formally accepted in writing, the appointment process is concluded and all applicants are informed.
- As a general rule, professors are appointed as civil servants. If the legal requirements for appointment as a civil servant are not met, a contract of employment is concluded instead. The appointment process ends with the formal appointment or the conclusion of an employment contract.
Universities of applied sciences focus on practice-oriented teaching and continuing education. They conduct application-oriented research and development. Students are equipped to independently apply and further develop scientific knowledge and methods, or to pursue artistic activities in their professional practice. Accordingly, the core responsibilities of professors include:
- Teaching (18 teaching hours per week during the semester)
- Participation in academic self-governance
- Applied research (particularly relevant for W3 professorships)
In addition, under Section 46 of the LHG Baden-Württemberg, the main duties of professors include, for example, participating in admission selection procedures and university examinations, providing appropriate support and supervision to students outside teaching hours, and contributing to the quality development of teaching and learning as well as to academic advising.
We are a modern university with excellent facilities and an international network, located on a large research campus in Stuttgart, the state capital of Baden-Württemberg. Like the region itself, we stand for creativity, innovation and diversity, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration, internationalisation and entrepreneurial thinking.
The benefits of a professorship include:
- Significant freedom to shape your work, offering opportunities that few other professions can match
- The opportunity to discover and develop new ideas with others and put them into practice
- A meaningful and varied career with the freedom to shape your own teaching and research
- Working with motivated young people on current and forward-looking topics
- A strong focus on practical relevance and applied research, including knowledge transfer and support for start-ups
- A secure career path, generally with civil servant status
- International collaboration with other universities and external partners
- The freedom to develop your own areas of focus in research, teaching or academic self-governance
- Support for initiating research projects, including funding opportunities and content-related and administrative support from the Institute for Applied Research (IAF) and the Finance Department
- Support and advice on teaching from the Center for Learning and Development (CLD)
- Onboarding programme for newly appointed professors
- A shared commitment to “good teaching” and “good learning”, based on HdM’s Teaching and Learning Principles

It can therefore take several months from the submission of an application to the final offer of appointment or notification that the application has been unsuccessful.
As a general rule, all professors appointed as civil servants for the first time are initially appointed on a probationary basis for a period of three years. If the probationary period is successfully completed, the civil service appointment is converted to a permanent appointment.
The arrangements are similar for professors employed under an employment contract. They initially receive a fixed-term employment contract, which is followed by a permanent contract after successful completion of the three-year probationary period.
Depending on the professorship advertised, professors appointed as civil servants are paid according to salary grade W2 or W3. Professors employed under an employment contract are paid at a corresponding level.
In addition, the W salary system provides opportunities to receive various types of allowances, subject to certain conditions.
