Teaching Assignments at HdM
As a University of Applied Sciences (HAW), we provide practice-oriented teaching and conduct application-oriented research and development.
Each semester, around 200 external lecturers complement the teaching provided by HdM professors by sharing their specialist knowledge and current insights from the world of work. We equip our students with the skills to independently apply and further develop scientific knowledge and methods, combining these with practice-oriented knowledge from the professional world. FAQs for your application as an external lecturer
You can easily register for our talent pool for external lecturers via our registration portal. Your details will be reviewed internally, and we will contact you if there is a suitable teaching opportunity.
The requirements for external lecturers are set out in § 56 LHG. As a general rule, external lecturers must have completed a university degree and demonstrate teaching aptitude, usually through experience in teaching or training or by participating in higher education teaching and learning development courses. They must also have the appropriate educational background, skills and professional expertise for the duties they are expected to perform.
Application expenses and any travel costs cannot be reimbursed. However, you may be able to claim these costs as tax-deductible expenses.
External lecturers are appointed by the university to teach under a teaching assignment. A teaching assignment constitutes a public-law service relationship of a special kind.
Please note that external lecturers may hold teaching assignments totalling no more than 8 semester hours per week (SWS) at the same time across all universities and universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg. This corresponds to a maximum of 240 teaching hours per year. In total, no more than 8 SWS may be taught on any one day.
Teaching assignments are generally issued for one semester and paid at the end of the semester. Payment is based on the actual number of teaching hours delivered that are eligible for remuneration.
External lecturers receive €40.00 per teaching hour (SWS). This rate also covers any travel expenses incurred. The rate applies to a lecture or teaching hour of at least 45 minutes.
The remuneration covers the following:
- preparation and follow-up of the course
- teaching the course
- examinations (the obligation to prepare, conduct and mark examinations is set out in the applicable Study and Examination Regulations (SPO))
- travel time to and from the teaching location
- travel expenses
